THE BOOK

After I graduated from high school, my chances of going to college at the start of the next school year seemed uncertain. So, I began looking for a job to earn some money for tuition. My aunt referred me to a friend who owned a wholesale store located in downtown Olongapo. I got a job there working as the storekeeper’s helper. My job was to bring items from the storage room out to the store shelves for display and to arrange the boxes of goods in the storeroom. In my second week, I was working on top of some boxes stacked ten feet high when I accidentally stepped on an empty box, which caused me to stumble. I fell hard to the floor, screaming.

I hurt myself—I was bruised, and my left arm was sprained. I went home, and later the owner told me not to return to work again. I was fired. It was a very frustrating and disappointing experience. I went back home and sought out other opportunities.
